What is it?
Service-Learning is a teaching method that combines meaniful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to the real world: they then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between their service and learning.
Maryland's Seven Best Practices of Service Learning
All service learning experiences should meet all the Maryland's Seven Best Practices of Service-Learning (SL). The SL criteria are:
1.Meet a recognized need in the community,
2.Achieve curricular objectives through SL,
3.Reflect throughout the SL experience,
4. Develop student responsibility,
5.Establish community partnerships,
6. Plan ahead for SL,
7.Equip students with knowledge and skills needed for service.

Service Learning - Do's and Don'ts : MSDE Dos and Don'ts
Students need to be aware that Faith-based Service is not be counted towards Service Learning. Any activity whose chief purpose is to convert others to a particular religious, moral, or spiritual view and/or which denigrates the religious, moral, or spiritual views of others cannot be counted. This includes Vacation Bible School (VBS).
High School Graduation Service-Learning Requirement
All student graduating in the state of Maryland are required to have a minimum level of SL engagement of at least 75 hours. Frederick County Public Schools has adapted its curriculum so that these hours are infused within its curriculum.
Middle School Meritorious Service Award
Students in Middle School may earn service learning hours. If one earns a minimum of 25 service-learning (SL) hours, then he /she will recieve a Meritorious Service Award . Students need to complete a "Record of Student Learning Activities" document after each time they provide service. This document is available on Mr. Adamiak's Home page under "Related Documents". It is also available in print form, just outside his room B109.
One should complete the first part of this form before he / she starts. It requires some basic information and a signature from Mr. Adamiak.
Once the Service Learning project is complete, one should give the completed application to Mr. Adamiak. He tracks all information for each student and forwards the information to both Urbana and Oakdale high schools.
